Your goals are waiting to be reached at the UMSL Recreation and Wellness Center. The RWC is filled with a variety of state of the art equipment, group fitness classes, personal training, and wellness education. No matter what your fitness and wellness goals are, the RWC can help you achieve it!

Group Fitness Classes: Choose from over 30 group fitness classes each week to add fun and variety to your exercise routine. Each class will offer a great, unique workout and the opportunity to mingle with people who share your same fitness goals. We offer classes that are great for people at all levels, from beginner to lifelong exerciser.

Fee Based Programs: These classes are the perfect way to learn a new skill or technique from a qualified instructor. Get personal attention in these progressive classes and learn new ways to stay fit.

Personal Training: If you are looking for a plan that is more customized to your needs and wants, Personal Training is for you. Get individualized direction in reaching your health and fitness goals by meeting with one of our personal trainers to learn how to exercise safely, efficiently, and effectively. We offer solo, duet, or trio sessions.

Fitness Certifications: Turn your passion for group fitness and personal training into a career! The RWC hosts instructor certification workshops taught by national fitness organizations (AFAA, ACE, Yoga fit, INSANITY®, etc.).

The Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton is a state-of-the-art facility that serves all of the community’s health and wellness needs. As the only fitness center in the area fully accredited by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA), the Wellness Center is dedicated to medical fitness and integrated care as a prescription for better health. Make a seamless transition from therapy (physical, occupational, speech, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation) to the Health & Wellness Fitness Center at Hazleton. The exercise physiologists are fitness specialists who work with patients one-on-one to develop an individualized plan that is customized to meet personal fitness standards and promote medical health and safety as a top priority. Current patients completing their therapy at the Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton can enroll with the fitness center for a reduced yearly fee. This yearly fee includes: an initial evaluation (health history, weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, body fat measurements and target heart rate) and fitness testing, including flexibility, two one-on-one training sessions with a fitness trainer and an individualized fitness plan.

The Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton is helping your kids stay fit and healthy through evaluations, individualized personal training sessions with modern, easy-to-use fitness equipment, and a kids weight management program. The Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton is open at convenient times to accommodate busy, on-the-run schedules.

Weight management

Adults

Obesity is a rising concern that is striking people of all ages. The Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton has developed a fun, comprehensive and effective weight management program that combines good nutrition with personalized training and education. The weight management program is a perfect solution for those looking to loose an extra few pounds, while also incorporating all the necessary components to assist bariatric patients in their weight-loss goals after surgery. The program includes an initial evaluation by a fitness specialist, development of an individualized fitness and nutritional program, access to state-of-the-art exercise equipment, personalized training sessions and two re-assessments to review your progress.

Additionally, the Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton is the only fitness center in the area that utilizes the benefits of the Bodybugg system-an Internet-based program that uses an armband device to track calories burned versus calories consumed. The Bodybugg is placed on your upper arm and worn for the first 24 hours, minus showering. After the first day, it’s to be worn only during the day to record the amount of calories you burn.

Kids

Childhood obesity is on the rise. Help take charge of your children’s health by enrolling them in the Weight Management Program for kids (ages 12-15). It’s a fun, comprehensive and effective weight management program that combines good nutrition with personalized training and education.

The program includes an initial evaluation by a fitness specialist, development of an individualized fitness and nutritional program, access to state-of-the-art exercise equipment, personalized training sessions, and two re-assessments to review your child’s progress. While kids are educated about and learn to use the fitness equipment, the exercise physiologists also encourage fun activities to keep participants motivated.

Healthy-Steps Lebed Method Exercise Program

Are you currently or have you ever developed a condition called lymphedema after recovering from breast cancer or other forms of cancer? Or maybe you currently are suffering or have suffered from debilitating diseases such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, frozen shoulder or other chronic illnesses? Healthy-Steps, Moving You to Better Health with the Lebed Method, is an international therapeutic exercise and movement program with wonderful music designed to help you thrive physically and emotionally.

Anyone at any age can participate in this program from young adults to seniors, regardless of health or ability level. The Healthy-Steps program’s focus in on healing and is designed to help alleviate pain; improve your flexibility; improve strength, balance, endurance and overall wellness; as well as boost your emotional well-being and self image.

Here at the Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton, we offer classes using the Healthy-Steps, Moving You to Better Health with the Lebed Method. Instructors are certified in teaching this program to all abilities and ages. Fitness camps

Cross-training boot camp is a program that will enhance your physical fitness and push you to the limits.

Participants of all physical fitness levels will build muscle, strength, cardio endurance, flexibility, coordination and core strength through a variety of indoor and outdoor exercises. Participants will be educated throughout, including the basics of injury prevention.

The program benefits:

  • High school and collegiate athletes who want to remain physically fit in the off-season
  • Adult athletes who want to improve their game
  • Those looking to get in shape for summer swimsuit season

This individualized program is designed to help you beat the plateau and achieve your highest level of physical fitness. Price is dependent upon the number of sessions.

Giving to K

The Kalamazoo College Fitness and Wellness Center is one of the most important priorities of The Campaign for Kalamazoo College. Simply put, it is an indispensable element of an education that addresses the fullness of human experience. The significance of physical activity in the lives of our students is evidenced by their participation in the following:

  • Nearly half the student body is involved in intercollegiate or intramural sports
  • The many student organizations that focus on the body and movement such as; Frelon, Cirque du K, the Badminton club, K-Cheer etc.
  • A wide variety of physical education courses including; various forms of dance; martial arts, fencing; and circus arts.

The current fitness facilities consist of a 2,500 square foot weight room for students; and a 600 square foot converted squash court housing exercise equipment for faculty and staff. There is no dedicated space for dance. Group wellness classes such as yoga and Pilates are typically held in multi-purpose rooms in the Upjohn Library Commons or the Hicks Center. A new fitness and wellness center will bring healthy activities for the entire campus community together under one roof.

Sited adjacent to the Markin racquet complex, the new 30,000 square foot, two-story center, with an estimated cost of $9 million, will house:

    • A weight and cardio fitness area of sufficient capacity to meet the needs of all students and employees
    • 5 large multi-purpose rooms
    • 2 Racquetball courts
    • Expanded locker rooms (for general use and for the K tennis teams)
    • Offices for the men’s and women’s tennis coaches
    • Office and assessment room for the campus wellness director as well as expanded storage areas
    • Space for the George Acker Tennis Hall of Champions

Endurance Spin: Features a 90-minute ride. Participants train their body to be more efficient at metabolizing fat and maintaining a constant steady state of training. Increased pedaling efficiency and aerobic capacity are the main focus of this class. Lose yourself in the motivating music and challenge your body and soul!

Dance Fusion: Styled as a Zumba-like class, fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away! This routine features interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.

Water Fitness: An upright pool workout that focuses on aerobic intensity and muscle toning. Swimming itself is not included in the workout. Join us for a low – to no – impact workout!

Interval Training: This class alternates high intensity bursts of cardio with body sculpting exercises. The ultimate body-shaping, fat-burning, and strength training class!

Spinning: Is a unique indoor stationary cycling program that is one of the hottest classes in the local community. This class is for people of all ages and fitness levels and is NOT just a ‘hard-core’ fitness program for elite athletes. Although not required, bring your bike shorts, hand towel, and water bottle for this class. *Limited to 20 patrons.

Yoga: Combines the best of Yoga flow (Vinyasa) and core workout, to strengthen the core while lengthening and invigorating the entire body. These classes are mixed level – the instructor offers options for both beginners and seasoned students in the same class, in an ongoing flow of movement. You can make the class just the right level of challenge and ease that you need each day. You will soon notice changes in what you can do and how you feel!

Cardio Circuit: Offers a total body workout! Intervals of high intensity cardio and strength and toning will be sure to get your heart rate pumping and muscles burning, covering exercises that will also strengthen the core! This class is mixed level, everyone is welcome. *Please arrive early, if possible, to set up your equipment.

Deep Water Fitness: Same as the ever popular Water Fitness class; however, this class is taught predominantly in the deep water of the pool. Swimming itself is not included in the workout.

Cross Training: Is a total body workout. It focuses on building core and muscle strength while also incorporating intervals of cardio. This class is mixed level, everyone is welcome. Come and have fun while getting a total body workout! This class is fun, effective, and for all fitness levels.
